Wait...what? You have to pay a yearly fee for multi-player access? Is that for all multi-player? Or just access to "official" servers? Or just access to some sort of server announcement race-cast-type thingie, but if it's not an "official" server, or if you know the IP address you're OK?

If that is for any multiplayer access, then we need to start looking elsewhere for our next platform and to do it asap. EDIT: Actually 12.99 a year is extraordinarily cheap, but infinitely more expensive than what it costs now :)

I don't care if it is 1 cent per year.  I am not going to invest modding time, admin time, and general hobby time in a subscription model.

Their statement is unclear.  Could just be the matchmaking service. Or not.

Just in case, I am revisiting the known alternatives to see their current states.
