Practice Times Etiquette

Posted by AJ Weber (Admin) at March 10. 2010

If you accidentally cut a corner and get a time improvement from it, either slow down dramatically for the rest of that sector, or abort your stint.  This is the second week in a row where we have purple sectors on the timesheets from cuts.  There is no excuse at almost all tracks, because an unfinished lap does not register its sectors.  Worst case, if you have a purple-cut, hit escape and get back to the garage: don't finish the lap.  If you are certain you can slow down enough before the end of the sector to not have a purple sector, then you can continue on (useful for stint tests).  The only time when there is an excuse for a cut-purple is at a track where the cut is on the last corner and the last corner is right at the start-finish line.  I can think of no track like that in our pool.

AJ.

Following up to this. I see that i have got a "purple cut" on my timming sheets.

I must admit i did not plan to have this come up and yes it was a over shot corner that resulted in that time for the sector. I re joined the track just before the sector line and continued on to get speed up for the next lap.

Now that you have made me aware of this problem i will not continue with the timmed laps if it happens again.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Ian

Thanks.

Note that a purple-cut not only messes up the concept of purple itself, but it also messes up the theoretical and gap calculations.  In particular, that theoretical time is especially useful, because it has been a decent rough early to mid week predictor of what pole pace might be.  By late week it is usually faster than pole, but by then the front runners are posting near-pole times.
