1.2 Hours of Sebring: Post-Mortem

Posted by Zack Litchfield at April 02. 2011

So I am opening this thread so that we can discuss the 1.2 Hours of Sebring race we just held. I want to get feedback on what people thought of the track, the length of the event, the racing and just in general how everyone felt the race went. We are looking to hold a longer 2.4 Hours of Le Mans race in June/July, so length is a key aspect of the feedback for me.

I also know some people were having issues with the headlights on the cars. I am curious to see if this is a file that can be easily edited, or if that is a fixed aspect of the car as a good portion of the Le Mans race would be during "night".

I very much enjoyed the laid-back nature that I feel the event fostered. Even though there was something small at stake (which congratulations to C and Nico on grabbing one seed point each for winning), I didn't feel pressured or disappointed by not being able to run at the top. It was quite the contrary to me as I am viewing this as my best finish ever. 5th overall and 2nd in the class doesn't get much better. The banter between drivers was fun, and is something we never see during GP races which was awesome. I felt that the field was a tad small for the length of the track (I was hoping for about 13-14), which does worry me a bit for Le Mans, but there was some good racing early on before the field got spread out, and realistically that is exactly what happens in RL, so how could we not expect it to happen online.

Opinions? Would you have a problem running another event of this length? or longer?

Thanks to all who turned out. It was a blast.

I really liked the track and the racing.....until the night time came.  The Fabcar headlights were a no deal for me.  They wouldn't even show the next 100ft braking marker.  It was better when I went to the swingman hood view, but I prefer to stay in the cockpit view as I really like the imersion  it gives me.

If this "problem" can be fixed I am all for a similiar race later on, just not sure LeMans is the proper track for it.  It is so long that not soon after starting I am sure it is going to turn into a practice session as you won't have anyone around to race with.

Yeah, my key factor for these races is "car density". Sebring fell just under, but we could have had the exact number needed had Dennis raced, AJ been able to get in on time, and Sammy been able to make it back. The key density IMO is 2 cars per km, which would be 17-18 for Le Mans (it was 12-13 for Sebring)

Also exactly how much of a "problem" is it? How far IRL do the headlights usually cover? 100m? More?

I agree with Scott that the headlights didn't reach nearly far enough, the distance boards would pop up at me and I would have to react as fast as possible. It also caused a problem when somebody decided to knock down the first distance board at turn 10. I (quite embarrassingly) missed my braking point 3 laps in a row there.

The distance of the event was fine, and I really liked the 5 minute brake mid-race. Maybe we should do 2-3 of those at Le Mans. I'm hopeful that by June we will have rF2 and more active members. I would also prefer more prototype-like cars for the rF2 mod.

Thanks for the event Zack

For me this event was really amazing. I love the track in combination with the Porsche. Night racing was fun too. I had no issues with the headlights of the Porsche.
The racelength was right for me. I wont race any longer than 90min. I was a bit disabppointed by the outcome of drivers. I expected 15 racers or so.

Grats to Zack. I see you improved alot over the last months. When I joined GRID you were an all over the track driver but now you are running decent speed and its nice racing you. The first two laps were great.
