Real Life Driver Analogs

Posted by AJ Weber (Admin) at March 23. 2011

Sometime we have silly little threads like this.  We have not had one in a while, so we're due. :)

What real life driver do you think is most similar to yourself, except in skill level.  So who is closest in things like actual style, idealized style, racecraft posture, etc.   The fun is in the description and rationization, so it'll be cooler if you are verbose.

If you also race in real life yourself already, don't pick yourself.  :)  And if possible try to pick someone most people here would recognize.  F1 and Indy drivers, past and present, are a good place to start.

edit: I stress 'except in skill level'.  It is perfectly acceptable to say Lewis Hamilton even though you may be nowhere near his skill level...for example if you strive to excel in braking in particular and  build your base style around that, even if in actuality you suck at braking.

Nico has me feeling like Felipe Massa.

I find Alan's choice of Hunt as his forum name funny, and his offline rants seem Hunt-like

Oooo, yeah, good idea.  I'd say it is completely fair game to analogize other members to RL drivers as well. :)  That'll be fun.

So does that make Nico Schumi, Kimi, or Alonso?

Style-wise, from observation, I'd say neither Schumi nor Kimi.  Brundle in his 06 coverage actually has a very good pre race style comparison study of exactly those three drivers, along with Button.  In fact, it is that study that gave me the idea for this thread.  Anyway, Schumi and Kimi actually have very similar styles and drive almost from the rear end more than the front end.  Alonso on the other hand likes a more understeery car and drives (modulates) very much off the front end -- basically he rams the car into a mild understeer space where he has buffer to get creative with the front end.

So constrained to those three, I'd nab Nico as Alonso.

edit: with the magic of the intertubes, I can can link to someones extraction of that clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOhgI1hQA68
