I want to join your team

Posted by Nico Brandt at August 30. 2010

Hi,

after testing the car and talking to Alan, I decided to ask for joining the SDL team.

I´m 30 years old and live in Germany. I´m simracing for about 15 years now. I raced all Papyrus and Simbin games and of course rFactor. Now I´m sucked into iRacing. Normally I dont race fantasy stuff but the feeling with this mod is really good. So let me know if you like me to join the SDL team.

Nico

Welcome Nico, to SDL and Grid.  It's my first season with SDL and we got off to a good start at Spa, mostly thanks to Cordell (C), it will be good to have you with us.

Sorry, I can't let that slide, since it's a bit of a pet peeve with me.

Sim-racing is fantasy.  Get over it.  Cars from iRacing or wherever aren't any more 'real' or 'right' than anything else.  Sure, maybe they pull some telemetry numbers into the black box, but inside that box there's so much fudging and kludging and faking going on that to call anything non-fantasy is disengenuous at least, and borders on charlatanry or fraud at worst.

Don't get sucked into the fundamentally wrong and bigotted mindset that says some parts of sim-racing are 'fantasy' and others aren't.

Welcome Nico, to Grid and to SDL. I've raced iRacing too and must admit that the physics and detail of that sim are way better then the consumer version of rFactor. On the other hand it comes nowhere near competing with the community aspect of racing that Grid provides.

Yea thats a strange subject, as I have got older I am less drawn to the authenticity of sports sims,(driving/golf/ice hockey, it all seems insignificant now compared to my early gaming days.  I remember almost ejaculating at the sight of Domarks F1 for Megadrive with all the current teams available to race the full calendar. Now I couldn't care less, and also some fantasy tracks are excellent (Grand Valley/Vitus Park).

I don't care if I am in fantasy world, aren't we all?.
