rFactor servers offline (lightning damage) [solved]
Up to Support
A thunderstorm knocked out our primary gridmotorsports servers last night.
I've got all of the linux services resurrected on another box. Unfortunately, that other box is what was running our rFactor servers.
I likely won't get the windows stuff running again until tonight.
On an interesting note... I actually saw an electrical arc in the machine. Twice. I have two UPS's, and 4 of 5 machines that were running at the time stayed up, while the 5th (the main server, wouldn't you know) died. I heard a loud pop, too, so I'm guessing a weak capacitor on the mobo (or power supply) failed. I haven't had a chance to investigate further. Luckily the harddrives were fine and so I just moved them over to the other (identical) server -- a benefit of my RPIS policy (redundant pair of identical servers).
OUCH.....damn that is some strange happenings. I had a PS go bad on me and did the same internal lightening and sparks. Unfortunately the whole works got fried......
Well I worked on it last night and discovered that the mobo was indeed fried, rather than just the power supply as I'd hoped. That's why the rF servers are still offline. I have to do a complete rebuild with juggled parts to get a platform up again for the windows stuff. Should be no later than Wednesday night.
The irony is that I've been right on the cusp of ordering new HW as part of my (long) upgrade cycle. So mostly I'm just annoyed that I've got to bother with this now when I'm just going to be doing it again in a couple of weeks.
