Transitioning to Teamspeak 3 or Mumble

Posted by David Hostetler (Admin) at March 24. 2010

I'm going to be setting up a teamspeak 3 server and a Mumble server, with the intent of switching our official league communication to one or the other prior to the start of the 2010B season.  TS v3 has been out for a little while now, and I'm hearing good things.  Mumble, on the other hand, offers some unique multi-channel linking/hierarchy features that would be very cool if they work as advertised.

Dennis -- this involves you, obviously, since you've been hosting our off-site primary TS server.  I assume it's no trouble for you to get a different one swapped in when we give the green light?

As a reminder of why we've used TS and not Ventrilo, it's because:

  1. TS doesn't have crappy private server license restrictions.
  2. TS has a fantastic dedicated linux server.
  3. TS has a native linux client.
  4. Ventrilo is used by all the WoW addicts, whom we both pity and loathe.

What's mumble?  It's an opensource VOIP tool, peer to TS and Ventrilo.  And it has some wicked cool ACL/group features which we could take advantage of.  See: http://mumble.sourceforge.net/ACL_and_Groups

Specifically -- think in terms of having dedicated team channels with private coms, while still allowing a public channel and marshal broadcast.   But Mumble is a big unknown for us, so we'll need to put it through the paces moreso than TS.

Any questions? All in favor?

Just so you guys also know, the culture GMWC police have reviewed the possibilities too.  If we have private team channels, they WILL STILL BE OPEN to the marshal.  We will not fall into typical clan culture.

Good idea, TS2 cannot be easily acquired now so new members wont have easy access to it. Makes sense.

Yes, I should be able to install either with no problem.

I should probably take a look at the docs for both to see if there are any significant differences when it comes time to set them up.

Actually the TS2 client is still easy to find, just go to the bottom of their download page and look for the link to their "software archive"
