Updated forum sections
Up to Support
A few weeks ago when we created the new R&D section of the forum, I also tweaked the definitions of the other sections. The descriptive blurbs on the main forum page are updated and as appropriate as I could make them.
Notably, the 'Tech Support' section became just 'Support', and was redefined to encompass a broader range of issues on which someone might be soliciting help. Certainly the usual gambit of issues involving mod installation, use, and so forth, server problems, and website (mis)behaviors should go in 'Support'. But also calls for help on things peripheral to your league participation are suitable, like help with graphics cards, steering wheels, etc.. Basically, if you need actual help, and you think our community is the appropriate (as opposed to simply the most convenient) place to ask rather than some other (presumably better educated) one, then post it in 'Support'.
I'd like to see the support in Support be provided by anyone who's able and willing. Yes, AJ or myself are most likely to handle direct mod problems and whatnot, but everyone should feel encouraged to chime in anytime something overlaps with experience or expertise on their part.
Eventually, I'd also like to see us more consistently use a formal issue tracking system for actual 'bug'-type stuff, and that's partly what motivates the shift in scope of the Support section. It won't always be the home for 'bugs' that we're dealing with, and instead will primarily become a resource for community self-help on GridMotorsports (and related) topics.
The 'Computing & Hardware' section is now 'Computing & Gaming', and is less about just pieces & parts and more about both tech in general and gaming in general. I just moved a couple of recent threads out of Off-Topic and into 'Computing & Gaming' as good examples of the shift. Conceptually, computing and gaming are categories that straddle the line between on-topic and off-topic for us, as a sim-racing community. Rather than banish it all indiscriminately into Off-Topic, or into League (where it risks diluting important core discussions), it gets its own section and can flare up however it sees fit. Basically, this section expanded from what it was before to be more than just hardware, and now hosts all 'techutainment' discussions. Not that non-electronic gaming isn't welcome, because it is - and it should go here as well.
Off-Topic is just as much 'off-topic' as before, if not moreso. It's still the place for anything that isn't about what we do, specifically, as a sim-racing/gaming community. As mentioned in the previous bullet, it's the case that some of the other sections are a bit more broad than they used to be, so things you might have (rightfully) put in Off-Topic before may have a legitimate home in one of the other sections. Politics, movies, current events, international news, meditations on the eventual falsification of String Theory, etc... all belong in off-topic. Off-Topic is like porn: you pretty much know it when you see it. Note that actual porn should not go in any section.

As always, your thoughtful use of the forums is appreciated, and helps this become and remain a valuable and fun communication tool for everyone.
