Possible end to the dreaded 'time-out' problem
I ponied up $100 for a new router to replace the actiontec model that came from verizon with the FiOS install. All evidence suggests that it is the root cause of the disconnect-induced time-out problems that people experience when/if rFactor hard crashes out from under them while they're connected to the server. Verizon doesn't offer any other model, so I couldn't just pester them until they replaced it. I also have reason to believe that it's a design flaw, not a 'lemon' that I just was unlucky enough to get, so having Verizon swap it out for one of the same model likely wouldn't make any difference. There is a rumor of an impending new model that they're going to be deploying soon, and a good number of existing FiOS subscribers are queuing up to demand that they get their actiontec router replaced as soon as the new one is available. But it's all rumor, and could remain that way for awhile.
Most people with the means to do so, however, simply purchased a different router and replaced the actiontec themselves.
And that's what I'm finally resorting to. There's nothing wrong with the actiontec that I've witnessed, save for this stupid rFactor crash quirk. But it's plagued us for long enough, and is frustrating enough, that I just got fed up and purchased a new router.
It got here yesterday. I was going to take things offline and do the replacement tonight, but Dennis is running a club event tonight, so I'll postpone the swap effort until tomorrow.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it goes smoothly and (more importantly) that it immediately resolves the time-out problem. I'll ask several folks who are versed in the gratuitous details of this issue to help me test things afterwards (that's you, Tom, and maybe Doug and AJ).

Rock on. You're my favorite driver now, Mike.
I'll be sure to surreptitiously add a few HP to your engine. shhh -- don't tell anyone.
