New Member Application

by David Hostetler [modified 2011-01-28 09:19] [posted 2007-11-24 21:38]

A form for prospective members to provide information necessary to integrate them into the league.

This form allows you (a new or prospective league member) to provide us with information necessary to integrate you into league activities.  It also gives us some initial background on you and the expectations you have for participating in a racing league.

This is not an 'application' in the sense that you may be rejected.  If you want to be a member in the league, we'd be happy to have you race with us.  In all likelihood, you've been directed to this form by someone already in the league, either because they felt compelled to recruit you or you indicated an interest in the league.  That communication probably was your interview for the league in a more traditional sense, meaning that if whomever you spoke with did not think you were a good fit for the league they wouldn't have directed you here in the first place.

Or maybe you just found your way here on your own.

However, if filling out this form is in fact the first communication you're having with the league (either its admins or members), that's ok.  We'll use it as the catalyst for talking with you more specifically about the league and its goals/policies.  Don't let that scare you - it won't be a 'job interview' either.  The point is ultimately just to make sure that everyone understands what the league is like, what we want it to be like, and then leave it up to you, the 'applicant', to determine whether or not the league offers the kind of experience that you seek.

But enough of that. The application consists of a little bit of personal history, information, some gaming related questions, and some questions regarding what you want to get out of, as well as put into, a racing league experience.

That's it! If you have any questions about the form or the league, just indicate them in the 'comments' section at the end, and we'll try to address them when we reply to you.

(Required)
Personal Information
Basic information about you.
(Required)
Please enter your full name (first last). There's nothing stopping you from entering a fake name, but we'd very much prefer that you provide your real name. We find that treating people as though they were someone that you meet and interact with face-to-face brings out the best behavior in everyone, and you wouldn't lie to someone you met at a real track, if you were joining a local racing club.
What name do you prefer to be used informally? This is the name we will use for you in league communications. This is not a game 'handle', whose use we discourage for the same reasons mentioned above regarding your full name. League members should use a standard format for their in-game name: '<first name> <last name>'. Our league encompasses a broad range of cultures and age groups and we like for everyone to feel like they actually know each other in a face-to-face sense, and normal names help with that. We're not trying to be stodgy, though. If there's something that people actually call you and you wish to use it, that's fine with us. Note that all league results will be normalized to use drivers' full names.
Specify at least one login name that you would like for your gridmotorsports.com website user account. We used to allow people to self-register themselves, but had to disable that due to spam and bot abuse. So now we create the accounts manually. List usernames below, one per line, in the order in which you prefer them. In the event that your preference is not available, or is not consistent with league policies, or if you just choose not to specify any, then one will be created for you, and will likely be the first letter of your first name, followed by your last name. So 'John Driver' would get 'jdriver'. Note that for the most part your real name will be displayed on the site, rather than your login name anyway. Login names cannot contain spaces or punctuation.
(Required)
If you wish to participate in league prizes, we'll need your physical mailing address. This is optional. If you choose not to provide the actual address, please specify at least the general location (i.e. city, country).
Gaming History and Preferences
This information helps us understand your gaming preferences, both in general and with regards to simulation racing.
Specify when you first started playing video games.
Specify (roughly) how many hours per week you play video games.
Select the types of video games that you play. Select as many or as few as you like. The more you select, the more varied we'll assume your tastes to be. The fewer you select, the more we'll assume you *really* like those few. Yes, genres are a silly, inadequate and self-limiting method of categorizing gameplay, but they function as a decent litmus test for preferences. Don't worry if something is missing that you desperately want to select - you get the chance in the next question.
Specify any additional genres that you enjoy that weren't listed in the previous question.
Indicate the kinds of racing games that you enjoy. Specify as many or as few as you like, just be honest. For each category, examples are listed just to help clarify the distinction.
Specify any additional types of racing games that you enjoy that weren't listed in the previous question.
Indicate what platforms you regularly play games on. You don't necessarily need to own it - if you play on your buddy's PS2 all the time, then check 'PS2'.
List your top 3 favorite games of all time. Any genre, any platform.
List your top 3 favorite racing games of all time. Any type of racing game, any platform.
Computing Environment
These questions help us understand the conditions in which you normally play, and whether special consideration may need to be taken to ensure that you are able to participate normally in league events.
Please give a general description of the major specifications for the PC that you use to play games. Generally, you can just list the CPU, the amount of RAM, and your make/model of graphics card. If you don't know one or more of these things, just say so, and list those that you do know.
Indicate the type of internet connection that you use when you play games. If you don't know, just select 'unknown'.
Indicate what type of input device you use when racing.
League Expectations
These questions help determine two things. (1) Whether there is any blatant mismatch between what the league provides and what you expect a league to provide. And (2) whether there is any blatant mismatch between what you envision your role and responsibilities to be as a league member and what we (as a league) expect from our members.
Describe briefly why you're seeking membership both in a racing league at all, as well as why you've chosen this league in particular. Include, if you can, a description of what you expect a league to provide for you, from its operations, atmosphere, administration, as well as its other members.

Describe briefly what you expect your responsibilities to be as a league member, ranging from general conduct, attendance, communication, to more diverse things like contributing content for tutorial resources, etc.. This can be as simple as, "show up, be respectful, have fun."

Finally, include anything that you want to say regarding the league and your potential membership in it; anything that will help us better take advantage of your participation and/or help us to provide a more enjoyable experience for you as a member.

If you have any questions about this form, or anything else about the league that wasn't covered in the form itself, please state them here and we'll address them when we receive your submitted form.
