Vehicle Specification Form

by David Hostetler [modified 2008-12-22 12:38] [posted 2008-02-22 02:16]

form for submitting a new vehicle specification for inclusion in the next official software update

This form allows you to define a new vehicle specification, which will be processed by the Grid Motorsports developers for inclusion in the next official software update.  The following restrictions apply to specification submissions:

  • This form only applies to the grid-gp class of vehicles.

  • If you are affiliated with a team, parts of the specification may be restricted according to that team's official vehicle policies.  Such restrictions will not be reflected in this form -- it simply allows a free-form specification to submitted.  If you are unsure of what is or is not available for you to use within the context of your team, please consult with your team leader.

  • The league operates under a 'parc ferme' type of situation for the majority of the season, not with regard to vehicle setup, but vehicle specification.  The majority of a vehicle's specification cannot be changed after a certain point each season, until the end of the season.  As above, this is not reflected in the form - it allows you to specify anything at any time.  If you include changes in a submission which are not allowed, they will simply be ignored, and any allowed changes will be applied.  Typically, liveries are the only thing that changes once the season specs are frozen, but if you are unsure just ask.

  • Note that most of the form is optional.  Anything that you choose not to specify will be interpreted to mean "don't change from my previous submission".  If you don't have a previous submission, then omitted options will be interpreted to mean "use the default."  You can of course actually choose the defaults (whose values are indicated) and the effect is the same.

  • This form is also used to indicate team affiliation, which can be changed at any time, though that should not be done frivolously as there are season scoring implications for the team.  Since most teams have factory vehicle specification restrictions, if you make an affiliation change you typically will want to know about the new team's factory spec and include in the same submission any customizations that you wish to use for your vehicle (assuming they are allowed).

(Required)
Please use this field to provide feedback regarding both the form in general, and your particular submission. In particular, please indicate if there was something you wanted to be able to do but couldn't, or if there's anything out of the ordinary for your submission, or anything that needs clarified, etc.. Thanks!
Team
Select an existing team with which this vehicle should comply. If you are considering declaring a new team, please review the team policies before submitting this form. Team ownership options are available at the end of the form.
Indicate which (if any) team specification should be applied to this vehicle. Note that this means certain choices may revert to the value(s) designated as non-optional by the team owner. If you wish to declare a new team, select 'new team' and refer to the 'Team Ownership' section of the form.

Livery Options

There are three separate methods you may use to specify the livery (skin) of the vehicle. Please use only one. It does not matter which method you use - simply choose the one that best suits your preferences. You can resubmit your vehicle specification at a later time if you change your mind -- i.e. this is not a permanent choice.

Livery Method 1: Existing Skin
Select from one of the existing custom skins.
Any given skin may already be in use by other league members. Due to the possibility of use by more than one driver, we've opted to implement an 'identity stripe' on the rear wing of vehicles when necessary. If you choose a skin that is already being used, a colored stripe will be added to the rear wing to distinguish it. If you wish, you may specify the color of the stripe in the following field, otherwise the color will be selected for you. Note that the stripe will only be applied if the skin you select is already being used. You may write the name of the color (i.e. 'orange'), or specify a 0-255 RGB triplet value (i.e., [red], [green], [blue]), or in hex notation (i.e., FF8000).
Livery Method 2: Procedural Skin
You can describe a procedural skin that you wish to have generated for the vehicle. Just provide the primary and secondary colors. For each color, you may write the name of the color (i.e. 'orange'), or specify a 0-255 RGB triplet value (i.e., [red], [green], [blue]), or in hex notation (i.e., FF8000).
This is the base color of the vehicle body.
This is the color that will be used for accents/contrast (i.e. racing stripes, etc..) on the vehicle body.
Specify the vehicle number. This is simply a two-character string, so technically any alphanumeric combination is acceptable (i.e. '00', '1A', 'ZZ', '14', etc..). Please note that there is no guarantee of uniqueness for vehicle numbers in the league. Custom skins can (and should) incorporate whatever number they want. This field is strictly to allow for procedural skins to also incorporate a number.
Livery Method 3: New Custom Skin
Provide a new custom vehicle skin. Note that if you don't feel like creating one yourself, you can make a request on the forums for one of the graphic-saavy folks to create one for you. The recommended skin template for the vehicle is the Wardog template.
It must be a PNG graphic file with square dimensions that are a power of 2, and no bigger than 2048x2048 (1024x1024 is typical).
You can also optionally provide a custom driver skin. It must be a PNG graphic file, with square dimensions that are a power of 2 and no bigger than 512x512.
You can also optionally provide a custom helmet skin. It must be a PNG graphic file, with square dimensions that are a power of 2 and no bigger than 512x512.
Cameras
Select the camera group for the vehicle specification. You can select from one of the existing camera groups or provide a cam file which defines a new group.
Select from one of the existing camera groups. If you wish to provide a new camera group (in the form of a .cam file), select 'New Camera Group' and then use the file field below.
If you prefer, you can use a custom camera group by providing a .cam file.
Driveline
Select the driveline for the vehicle. Note that AS1 is only available for drivers with a rolling ranking of 6 or worse (and own no track records). The AS2 is only available for drivers with a rolling ranking of 10 or worse (and own no track records). Please review your standing in the rolling rankings if you're unsure if these restrictions apply to you.

Extended Specification Options: intended for Independents and Team Owners

If you chose to affiliate with an existing team, you can probably stop here (having likely specified driveline, livery, and camera options). You'll then receive the team's factory vehicle, with its default specification. If you chose 'Independent' as your team selection, or are a new or existing team owner, you'll probably want to complete the remaining bulk of the vehicle specification.

Engine
Select an existing engine, or design a new one.
If you wish to use an existing engine design, simply select it from this list and disregard the other engine fields. If you intend to use a new engine design, choose 'New Design' and provide the design properties in each of the remaining engine fields.

New Engine Design

All of the following engine fields are only relevant if you've chosen 'New Design' from the engine selection list.  These fields enable you to fully specify a new engine design.  If you selected an existing engine, you can just ignore these fields.

Specify a name for a new engine (it must be unique to the set of existing engine names). Leave this blank unless you're designing a new engine.
range: [0->100]
range: [0->100]
range: [0->100]
Specify the maximum redline RPM. The baseline value for the GP class is 10550. The minimum allowed value is 8440 and the maximum is 14770. Note that a higher redline limit does not equate to higher power. All engines are essentially normalized for overall power equivalence, so this redline limit is instead a means of making subtle changes to the engine's behavior as well as influencing the engine's distinct sound.
Specify the audio samples to assign to this engine. This is required only if you're designing a new engine.
Chassis
Select an existing chassis or design a new one.
If you wish to use an existing chassis design, simply select it from this list and disregard the other chassis fields. If you wish to design a new chassis, choose 'New Design' and provide the properties in each of the remaining chassis fields.

New Chassis Design

All of the following chassis fields are only relevant if you've chosen 'New Design' from the chassis selection list.  These fields enable you to fully specify a new chassis design.  If you selected an existing chassis, you can just ignore these fields.

Specify a name for a new chassis (it must be unique to the set of existing chassis names).
Select the suspension package for the new chassis.
Select the aerodynamic package for the vehicle chassis.
Specify the CG for the new chassis. Range: [177-235] (mm)
Specify the wheelbase size for the new chassis. Range: [3000-3200] (mm)
Specify the width of the front track. Range: [1300-1460] (mm)
Specify the width of the rear track. Range: [1300-1434] (mm)

Body Shapes

The following are the available vehicle body designs.  Note that there are no performance differences between any of the bodies - this represents a purely aesthetic choice.

Athens
Corinth
GMWC
Sparta
Select the body shape for the vehicle.
Brakes

The following are the specs for the current set of brake models:

Model Cold Optimum Hot Description
mk1 0C 600-650C 1300C widest useful operating range, more predictable out of optimum
mk2 150C 450-800C 1100C widest optimal operating range, less predictable out of optimum
mk3 0C 300-650C 1000C lower temperature optimum range, better cold brake response

Select the brake model for the vehicle specification.
Tires
Select the tires for the vehicle. If only one option is listed that means the league is currently using a spec tire.
Team Ownership
The fields in this section are only relevant for team owners (new or existing), and are used to define (or redefine) team properties and certain factory vehicle options. If you're the owner of an existing team using this form to redefine your factory vehicle spec, please be sure that you've selected your team name in the Team section at the top of the form. Please review the team policies before submitting this form.
If you're creating a new team, enter the full team name, which needs to be unique to the set of existing team names. Owners of existing teams should leave this field blank -- UNLESS you're changing the team name.
Check this box if the vehicle specification represented by this form is being provided as a team factory vehicle. Because team owners can field a personal car for themselves using this same form, checking this box indicates that this particular specification is a factory vehicle rather than a driver's vehicle.
The following field is only applicable if this form is being submitted for the purpose of defining or redefining a team factory vehicle (as indicated by the checkbox above). The following field allows you to define which parts of the factory vehicle specification are optional for your team members. For each of the categories, select it only if you wish to allow that category to be customizable by team members when they define their own vehicles. In other words, if you wish to run a totally 'spec' team, then none of the categories should be selected. The categories which you are generally encouraged to leave as optional have been selected by default.
